SEO is now a hot topic for online businesses, whether they like it or not! Even the feeble protests of a few die-hard anti-SEO people are fading. Mostly, those people are getting trampled into the dust by other professionals rushing to find efficient SEO professionals to give them the online success they so badly need.
There are two parts to any successful SEO campaign. What you do to your website, which is known as “on page SEO,” and what you do in other places, known as “off page SEO.” Both parts of your campaign are critical.
Is Your Web Design Up to Sniff?
First, you have to make sure your web design is up to the high standards set by the Search Engines. This generally means creating a website that is light on its feet, using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and as little Flash and JavaScript as you can. Avoid dynamic pages as these are impossible to optimize.
Then, make sure you have some decent content for your pages. Decent means informative and genuine.
Even the search engines can identify “filler text” these days. Human visitors will strike you right off their list if you can’t give them the information they came for.
Next, it’s time to establish your linking strategy. Forget the reciprocal link strategies you’ve heard so much about. They don’t work anymore, and can certainly get you penalized. Instead, try to get really good quality incoming links. Quality means relevant, and from reliable and trustworthy sites. This can be quite tricky of course, but the rewards are enormous.
The Best SEO Linking Strategies
You can get good links from posting on forums and social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us, Digg and Reddit. Writing articles that others will post on their website with a link back to you is a great strategy. Try to make sure that one of your major keywords is used in the anchor text though, to make the most of the link.
This means that, for example, I have written this article about SEO for you. I hope that other webmasters will deem it useful for their visitors and post it on their site. The link at the bottom that points to my site will use the words “SEO Copywriter.” This will make the link highly relevant to my website, and Google will reward me by kicking me up a notch or two. Well that’s the theory anyway, and it’s worked very well for a great many online experts. Try it and see!
